Procedures for Putting First Wash® Shower System In-Service


1. The incident will dictate when the FIRST WASH® Shower will be initiated.

2. Upon incident stabilization, install the FIRST WASH® Shower (Top Mount or Side Mount Model) in preinstalled, fixed Mounting Brackets on apparatus.

3. Mounting Bracket installation(s) may be on another apparatus (i.e. aerial ,rescue, or another apparatus) however, be mindful of safety trip hazards from water supply line(s) from engine, tender or hydrant supply,

4. Water supply should come from engine’s booster tank or from a supply source that will provide continuous water for firefighters to exit the Hot Zone and walk immediately to the FIRST WASH® Shower System (Warm Zone).

5. Hose appliance, adapters and FIRST WASH® Quick Connect fittings will make connections easier and faster to implement completion of connections (sold separately).

6. Recommended pressure coming from the apparatus pump should be 45-50 psi from booster line or any discharge outlet at approximately 30 gpm.

7. Departmental standard operating procedures will dictate when FIRST WASH® Showers will be activated during seasonably colder events.

8. Follow IFCF Hot Zone Decontamination Matrix (available at for recommended decontamination protocols. The determination for initiating the FIRST WASH® shower application will be dictated by the amount of soiled contamination on the firefighters PPE. Normal shower durations of 15-20 seconds (45 psi / 30gpm) should be considered.

9. Follow doffing recommendations for safely removing PPE after a fire event.

10. Place contaminated or wet personal protective equipment (PPE) in a FIRST WASH® Hazmat Bunker Bag, and following recommended instructions for identifying contaminated status of PPE, and proper bag sealing, safely transport PPE back to station.
